The first '3H' projects began in September 1979 focused on bringing Polio vaccine to children in the Philippines. The programme as a whole was intended to improve health,
relieve hunger, and enhance human and social development.
Rotary had never had a single corporate
cause of this kind. The Rotary International Board adopted the goal of a
Polio-free world as a major emphasis in 1980.
The history and progress of Polio
eradication is extensive including the long-time involvement of the World
Health Organisation, Centres for Disease Control, Bill and Melinda Gates
Foundation and others. The current position as at 2014 is that The Global
Polio Eradication Initiative is on track to achieve a Polio-free world in 2018.
There are 3 endemic countries left and
3.5 billion children immunised against Polio
