RYPEN is aimed at young people in the 14 -17 age group who are not
likely to be selected for Youth Exchange or later for RYLA, but who
possess qualities of decency, persistence and application and who
deserve further encouragement.

It is organised in Rotary District 9940 by the Rotary Club of Taihape Incorporated and held at the Kawhatau Outdoor Education Centre near Taihape. This is a facility owned by the Rotary Club of Taihape Inc, and administered by a local Trust made up of Rotarians and local outdoor enthusiasts.

All applications must be submitted through the Sponsoring Rotary Club. (Eligibility and conditions apply)

Programme Aims

The programme is planned to challenge all participants in situations that

  • Confidence
  • Leadership
  • Team cooperation
  • Physical limits
  • Social skills
  • Bush craft

The principal aim is to communicate a series of ideas and problems, challenges and social experiences which will assist participants in forming their own values and moral standards. It will hopefully broaden their horizons culturally, socially, academically and physically. Please do not nominate young people who have already experienced other outdoor pursuit experiences. Your members may know of a suitable candidate or you could speak to your local secondary school and they will be able to suggest a suitable student.

The facilities can accommodate 48. The maximum number of nominations per Rotary Club is 2. However, we may accept more depending on the number of nominations at the time of closing.

We strive for an equal gender balance.

When is it?

RYPEN is usually held in October.

The cost for Camp Fees and Programme Expenses is $220 per student paid by the nominating Rotary Club when the nomination form is submitted.

The Rotary Club of Taihape will transport students from the Taihape Town Hall to the Kawhatau Centre & return. Nominating Rotary Clubs and families of the nominated student/s need to confer regarding transport to & from Taihape.
